Drywall access panels are removable doors that allow you reach plumbing or HVAC systems behind finished surfaces like drywall or ceilings without leaving a hole. On this page you will learn how to select the correct panel door size, cut an opening, and finish installing based off your panel type.
Quick Tips for Success:
- Measure twice, cut once - account for the frame in your measurements.
- Choose the right location - avoid studs, pipes, or wiring.
- Prep the surface - clean, dry, and sand edges for strong adhesion.
- Test before finishing - check hinge direction and smooth functionality.
What is an Access Panel?
An access panel is a removable door that allows you to reach plumbing or HVAC behind a finished surface, typically drywall or a ceiling, without leaving a hole. All Morvat models are easy to install, paintable, and designed for repeated use.
Needed Tools and Equipment
Pencil, Drywall Saw, Measuring Tape/Level, Sandpaper, Caulk Adhesive (for some models)
Step-by-Step: Sizing & Installing an Access Panel
Step 1: Identify the area you need to reach and measure the service area. Pick the panel size based off the measurements. Take note that while many manufacturers require adding ¼” to the panel size, Morvat panels fit the exact labeled cutout size.

Step 2: Trace the cut using the panel frame or ruler. Confirm no pipes/wires are in the path.

Step 3: Cut along the traced line (jab saw works best). Sand the edges, dry-fit the frame, and confirm fit.

Step 4: Install based on panel type. All spring models are ready to click into place! If installing the Morvat Hinged Door Access Panel, then apply a caulk adhesive to the rim of the panel and press into the hole.

Common Mistakes (and Quick Fixes)
- Incorrect sizing → Many manufacturers require you to add an additional ¼” to the size panel that you have, but Morvat Drywall Access Panels are designed to fit perfectly when you cut the hole to the exact size listed on the panel.
- Not checking behind the wall → Scan/feel for lines before cutting; pilot hole first if unsure.
- Installing upside down (Yes, It Happens!) → Hinged panels are sometimes installed with the hinge or latch upside down, making them awkward to use. → Before securing, check which side the door swings.
- Bad adhesion → Sand the edges of your cutout. Wipe the area clean and dry before installing. Apply adhesive evenly, and don’t forget to wipe away any excess.
